Senior Rabbits
There are many benefits to adopting a senior rabbit!
What age do we class as a senior rabbit?
While domestic rabbits are clinically senior at 5 years old, we do not advertise a rabbit for adoption as a senior until 8 years+ old. Age is also related to size and breed. While smaller breed rabbits can live up to 16 years, giant breeds only have a lifespan of 4-6 years.
What additional care needs do older rabbits have?
Some older rabbits do not yet have additional care needs however at some point they will do.
- They often have arthritis so may need daily medication and they may have much less mobility so their set up may need adapted to include ramps and low entry litter trays.
- As they reach their last years they may become incontinent or need their bums kept clipped or cleaned as they may struggle to groom themselves.
- They may need their diet adapted. Some older rabbits may become overweight if they are less active but equally they can also lose weight easily therefore they should be weighed weekly to keep on top of their weight needs.
Each older bunny for adoption will have notes on whether or not they currently have additional care needs.
The adoption process for these seniors is the same for any other rabbit.
